       THE HISTORY OF THE MAHARAJGANJ----
       The district was carved out from the gorakhpur district on 2nd october 1989. it is famous for the ruins of buddha which are found here and expected that if proper excavation is done then many unknown fact about buddha will be discovered.
it is also believed that  while wandering the forest for 14 years , pandavas lived a year in disguise. they visited the lehra jungle and were offered shelter by lehra devi.
hiuen-tsang the famous chines traveller  also mention the temple in his book ''Si-Yu-Ki. during british raj there was an milatry camp named 'lehra'.

the district has one lok sabha(lower house ) constituency  named as maharajganj(uttar pradesh lok sabha constituency).

In 2006 the ministri of panchayati raj named maharajganj one of the country's 250 most backward district out of the total of 640. it is one of the 34 district in uttar pradesh currently receiving funds from the backward region grant fund programme (BRGF).

Maharajganj district comprises 4 tehsils:
  • maharajganj sadar ,4 community development blocks : MAHARAJGANJ , GHUGHLI, PANIYARA AND PARTWAL. 
  • Nuatanwa : comprising 2 community development block : RATANPUR AND LAXMIPUR.
  • Nichlaul : 3 community development blocks : NICHLAUL , MITHAURA , AND SISWA.
  • Pharenda : 3 community development blocks ; BRIDGEMANGANJ , DHANI , AND PHARENDA .
THERE ARE 1258 VILLAGE IN THE DISTRICT AND 19 POLICE STATION . SONAULI AND THOTHIBARI ARE THE BORDER CHECK POINTS AT NEPAL BORDER.

DEMOGRAPHICS --
Hinduism is practiced by majority of the population around 82%. and islam is fallowed by the 17% of the population. maharajganj has the higest population of the people following buddhism . this is because of GAUTAM BUDDHA  in the region as he born in lumbini locate nearly in nepal .

Maharajganj district is bounded by nepal in the north , the district of kushinagara in the east , gorakhpur in the south  and siddharth nagar and santkabirnagar in the west. it is the part of gorakhpur division.
